This is somewhat a random blog post, and I am sorry I haven't wrote in a while. I shall catch up on Dance Again with you soon and other scripts. I however have to get this down in writing, I've written it on paper, but I'd like to post it somewhere I can find it easily. So this in a way is much more a blog post for me then you. Read it anyway.
I love the Science fiction genre, transported to different worlds, different times. A common theme in the genre, is a dystopian future, where our lives have crumbled into sand. People are left dying and struggle for life, our hero then comes and puts a stop to that. Like in Mad Max, how Max and Furiousa kill the bad guy, and release the water to the slaves, improving on their dystopian world.
Joseph Gordon-Levitt however has got me thinking, after he posted a video discussing what would a Utopian story be? So, the future — are you thinking it's utopian or dystopian?
The idea of telling a story about a utopian world, is something that interests me. Its difficult to think of someone that has done it. Utopia is defined as a state of perfection, and perfection is something we all strive for in life, we all want perfect looks, the perfect life style, and the perfect family. That is somewhat our purpose in life, to gain these perfections and maintaining them.
So in a world, where perfection is had by all. What do we strive for? What do you close your eyes and dream about. Do you dream at all? The idea of a perfect world sounds dystoptian after some thought. Because we'd all be content, yet it would be meaningless. There is already a lack of meaning to our lives as we struggle for perfection, we accept the inevitability that one day it will all end.
We are however distracted by the wants and needs of our lives. That removed and with me having everything I want, sounds appealing yet, daunting. What would be the purpose of me living for as long as I can when I have nothing to do. When the world is equal and fair, it sounds so dull.
Is that the story that needs telling? That it is only by seeking perfection that we are able to find happiness and that in us all gaining that, the world doesn't sound so utopian. I still dream of a utopian future, but one that isn't built on this idea of perfection, but a world which is removed of biased. The acceptance and equality of others is the only way a utopian world can become a realistic and tangible future.
The depictions of a utopian life style are rather miss guided. White towers made of glass, worlds striped of colour and character. Is that truly what a utopian life would look like? We know our planet is dying and we demand so much off, it animals, spend the life they have been granted in cages. I imagine a utopian future isn't out there in front of us, it lies behind us, in the past. Where forest could grow and all animals were born wild.
Those are just the thought processes I am going through, I don't know if I'll be able to come up with a killer idea that will make it to a screenplay but there is a lot that calls for some exploration. Maybe that's why we don't live in a utopian society now, because we don't know what one would look like.
I will post again soon about my short film, sorry it has been to long, I have been really busy. Its a good thing nobody actually reads this thing or some of you could have been disappointed in me.
